What is lock bumping?
Bumping uses a “bump key” cut to the deepest possible pattern. Inserted into a standard cylinder and tapped gently, it makes the internal pins jump for a fraction of a second — just long enough to turn the lock and open the door. It needs no special skill, it is silent, and it leaves no signs of forced entry.
Why it is so dangerous
- Fast and silent — a standard cylinder can be opened in seconds.
- No marks — since the door is not forced, there is no visible damage. This can also make an insurance claim harder.
- Common on older doors — many cylinders fitted years ago, like the Ezcurra DS15, are especially vulnerable.
How to protect your door
The reliable defence is a high-security anti-bump cylinder. It uses special pins and mechanisms that stop the pins jumping the way bumping needs. Good anti-bump cylinders (Keso, DOM, Abus) also add anti-pick, anti-drill and anti-snap protection, plus a property card so keys can only be copied with your permission.
In most doors it is enough to change just the cylinder — the rest of the lock and the door stay. It is a quick job done on the spot.
